Spacing and review, without turning it into a second job
Reviewing at intervals is one of the few study techniques with strong evidence behind it, and one of the easiest to over-engineer.
Learners who complete a course and cannot do the thing three months later have not wasted their time exactly, but they have lost most of the return on it. Retention is not automatic and it is not proportional to how carefully the material was studied the first time.
Two findings from the research on this are robust enough to act on: spacing material over time beats massing it, and retrieving from memory beats reviewing notes.

Spacing
The same total study time distributed across several sessions produces better long-term retention than the same time in one block. Cramming works for an assessment next week and poorly for anything beyond it.
For a course this argues against the weekend-marathon pattern and in favour of shorter, more frequent contact — which is also, conveniently, what fits into an adult week.

Retrieval
Re-reading notes feels productive and produces familiarity: the sense that you know something because you recognise it. Recognition is not recall, and the gap appears at exactly the wrong moment.
Retrieving without the material in front of you — closing the notes and writing what you remember, or attempting the exercise from scratch — feels worse and works better. The difficulty is the mechanism, not an obstacle to it.
Study that feels easy is usually recognition. Study that feels effortful is usually retrieval. The uncomfortable one is doing the work.
Keep the system small
The failure mode here is not neglect but elaboration. Spaced repetition systems are absorbing, and it is easy to spend more time maintaining a card collection than practising the skill.
For most skill-based digital courses, the material worth carrying in a review system is small: the handful of facts, syntax and terms that must be recallable without lookup. Everything conceptual is better reviewed by doing an exercise.
A practical minimum
- End each session by writing, from memory, three things you learned. Two minutes.
- Start each session by attempting to recall the previous one before opening any notes. Two minutes.
- Once a week, redo one earlier exercise from scratch rather than reading over it.
- A month after finishing, build something small using the skill. This is the review that matters most and the one nobody schedules.
That is under ten minutes a week plus one session a month, and it captures most of the available benefit without a system to maintain.
Course designers can build this in
Most courses review nothing: each module introduces new material and the previous one is never revisited. Deliberately reintroducing earlier concepts inside later exercises costs nothing in course length and substantially improves what learners retain.
It also surfaces gaps while the course is still running, which is when they can still be fixed.
